Do you want to be the next star television interviewer? Do you have your eye on being a big-name columnist or international correspondent? 

Then we have got news for you! Enter our competition for a chance to win a fully-funded place at an international conference for aspiring young journalists in Edinburgh, Scotland’s historic capital City. The theme of this year’s conference is the Business of News. All you have to do is show us your writing skills.

About Future News

Future NEWS, a three-day event on 4-6 September 2015, aims to inspire the next generation of journalists. Future NEWS is delivered in association with the Scottish Government, the British Council and Reuters. The event takes place in the Scottish Parliament building and will bring together more than 100 young people from across the world who will:

  • learn key multi-media reporting and editing skills from established and emerging media and journalism professionals
  • network with the best from the world of media and journalism, and with other aspiring journalists
  • report using the Future NEWS multi-media real-time editorial system
  • build up your writing and multi-media portfolio to support your CV.

Your fully-funded place includes accommodation, travel to and from Edinburgh and subsistence. You can find out more about last year’s Future NEWS conference on their website.

The 2014 conference was targeted at younger aspiring journalists, Updates on the 2015 event will be posted soon.

How can I apply

We are looking for 4 Egyptian aspiring journalists to take part in the Future NEWS conference 2015 who can meet the following criteria

  • Aged 18-25 and are undergraduate or recent graduate
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Aiming for a career in journalism or a graduate programme in journalism

If you meet the above criteria then you are eligible to enter the competition.

You will need to write an essay or a piece of reportage of no more than 500 words answering the question: Why should I, from many, many applicants from around the world, win a place at Future NEWS 2015? Why does journalism need me?

All entries should be submitted by email to: FutureNews2015@britishcouncil.org.eg. The subject of the email should state ‘Future NEWS Competition Entry’ 

All entrants need to be able to commit to the three-day attendance at the full conference on 4,5,6 September and be able to travel to Scotland at Future NEWS’s expense. 

In addition to your entry all applicants should include the following information in their email:

  • Full Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Nationality
  • Current or past educational institution and level and course of study
  • Academic or professional reference with contact details
  • 3 x samples of published articles (online links or scans of hard copies)
  • Home Address
  • Contact Telephone Number
  • Email Address

Further evidence or testing of English language ability may be required. 

Deadline for receiving entries is Tuesday 7 July 2015 at 23.59 Egypt time.

Only one submission per applicant will be accepted and late entries will not be considered by judges. Future News is aimed at would-be journalists. 

When will I know if I have been successful?

All entrants will be informed be email by no later than 31 July 2015.
