UK Celebrates Top Egyptian Students after Outstanding Exam Success
British Embassy in Cairo, British Council Egypt, and Cambridge International Qualifications joined parents, students, teachers, and heads of schools to celebrate the Egyptian winners of the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards in Cairo and Alexandria. The Annual award ceremonies were held in Cairo on 23 March at the British Embassy in Cairo in presence of Deputy Ambassador Helen Winterton, and in Alexandria on 22 March with the presence of Consul General Caroline Alcock.
The ceremony celebrated the academic achievements of 98 secondary school learners’ awards in the 2015 Cambridge IGCSE and International AS and A Level exams, including 61 awards in Cairo and 37 awards in Alexandria.
British Deputy Ambassador Helen Winterton said, “These young Egyptians show that with the right support, the right education system, and a good bit of hard work, young Egyptians can achieve results amongst the very best in the world. I am proud that the UK, through Cambridge International Qualifications and the British Council, has helped them on their way to success. This is just one part of our work together on education. Whether through Chevening and Newton-Mosharafa scholarships, the British Council’s English language training, expert, and much, much more, the UK is helping support a well-educated, highly-skilled, and innovative new generation of young Egyptians who are vital to this country’s future.”
Caroline Alcock, British Consul General in Alexandria said “I was very much looking forward to meeting some of Egypt’s brightest young people at the Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards. Their success shows that with hard work and quality education, young Egyptians can achieve amazing results. They are role models for young people everywhere, and Egypt should be very proud of them”.
Waseem El-Hanbali, Regional Director, Middle East & North Africa, Cambridge International Examinations said: “It has always been great to visit our schools in Egypt and to interact with our parents and learners here. It makes me proud to see the great number of outstanding winners in the country every year. Egyptian learners are determined and I wish them all success in the future”.

Across the 110 schools here in Egypt this year, there were more than 22,000 candidates, sitting over 50,000 entries, with 98 High Achievers and 4 students top in the World. We hope that today’s High Achievers are taking a further step to helping Egypt, the region and the World deliver a brighter future. We are proud that the UK is part of their success: of what they have done, of what they will do.”
The IGCSE exams were first introduced by the British Council in Egypt in 1990 and attract around 22,000 candidates a year from over 100 different schools across Egypt. They represent one part of the wide range of highly distinguished educational systems and programmes offered by the British Council in Egypt in cooperation with Cambridge and the Ministry of Education.
