Rubayat El Nil is a shadow puppetry performance portraying the struggles of those who make a living off the land in the face of climate change and increasing environmental degradation. A fisherman's catch is tainted by industrial wastes poisoning the fish and those who consume them. A farmer is displaced from her land by rampant urbanisation. These stories attempt to capture a snapshot of the lives of victims of climate change in Egypt's Nile Delta, conveying a mix of frustration, persistence and optimism. It is both a reflection and a call to action, beckoning us to listen to the voices of the land and those who know it most intimately. Performances are followed by a discussion on the show and its themes.
Rubayat El Nil is a performance by the Benha Puppetry Troupe, supported by the British Council’s Grants to Arts fund.
