British Council’s statement about traffic accident – 17 February 2014

On Tuesday 17 February 2014, at around 10 am, a bus carrying seven Egyptian nationals to a British Council project event was involved in a road traffic accident on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road, approximately 140km from Cairo.  Five people died and one other person injured as a result of the accident.

We are in direct contact with local authorities, who are still establishing the cause of the accident.  Representatives from the British Council, including the Country Director travelled to the hospital on 17 February to offer support to the families concerned.

Mark Stephens, Director of the British Council in Egypt, said: “This is a tragic accident.  Our first concern is to provide whatever assistance we can to the relatives of those involved and our deepest condolences goes to the families.”
