Ayat AlTawel’s passion for English flourished at a British Council library. Now, as a Cluster Academic Lead, she empowers others across Egypt, Jordan and Mozambique.
From the moment I first stepped into the British Council library as a university student, I felt inspired. It was a hub of knowledge that brought my English studies to life – watching classic novels, listening to English podcasts, and immersing myself in the language. I never imagined that this very place would play a key role in my career.
After taking a couple of C1 courses, I was inspired to pursue teaching. Ten years into my teaching career, I decided to refine my skills with the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) programme at the British Council. It reignited my passion for teaching and opened doors I hadn’t expected. The most significant opportunity came when I joined the British Council’s Teacher Support Programme (TSP), the same place where I had once been a student.
Since joining in 2014, the British Council has offered me incredible professional development and opportunities to grow. Early on, I was encouraged to experiment with teaching techniques, leading to presentations at English language teaching conferences locally and internationally. These experiences shaped my personal and professional growth.
My journey has taken me from teaching in Egypt to becoming a Learning and Development Co-ordinator in Tunisia and, eventually, a Senior Teacher Trainer and CELTA tutor. Today, as a Cluster Academic Lead, I manage programmes across Egypt, Jordan and Mozambique. Each role has been a testament to the endless opportunities for growth that the British Council provides.
This journey is more than just a career; it’s about developing others, encouraging growth, and making a real difference. I am forever grateful for the experiences and support that have shaped my path with the British Council, and I look forward to what the future holds.
