From his humble beginnings as a night guard cleaner at the British Council in Gaza, Mohammad Rantisi navigated many challenges to become the Regional Exams Risk Support Manager for the Middle East and North Africa.
Mohammad joined the British Council in Gaza as a night guard cleaner in 1991, balancing long shifts with his studies in English Language and Education. His hard work paid off when he was promoted to roles in Information, Customer Services and Exams.
In 2010, Mohammad faced a career-defining moment when he was made redundant during a restructuring. Refusing to give up, he appealed the decision and competed for a new role, eventually becoming a programme co-ordinator. Today, he is the Regional Exams Risk Support Manager for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
The supportive culture at the British Council played an important role in Mohammad’s success, providing flexible work hours and partial funding for his MBA. Determined to give back, he founded the Youth Skills Development group in Gaza, overcoming early challenges to build a strong programme focused on leadership and skill-building.
His work continued with the Educators for Future programme, which encouraged teachers to collaborate with each other. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he quickly shifted to provide digital training across MENA.
Mohammad is determined to continue making an impact both within and outside of the British Council. He plans to document his experiences of creating positive social change, particularly in education, to inspire the next generation of leaders.
As well concentrating on his current role in exams, Mohammad wants to contribute to broader social initiatives that promote critical thinking, leadership, values-based education, and community empowerment. He remains committed to showing that persistence and dedication, when supported by the right environment, can lead to transformative change for individuals and communities.
‘My journey has been defined by resilience and a commitment to education. The British Council provided me with opportunities that allowed me to turn my struggles into successes, and I am grateful for that.’ Mohammad Rantisi, Regional Exams Risk Support Manager, Palestine
