In August 2021, Alaa found herself dealing with severe depression, feeling disconnected from her passion for teaching.
At this low point, she discovered Al-Azhar Teacher Activity Groups (TAG), designed to support and enhance the skills of educators in Egypt. Encouraged by her supervisor, she joined a WhatsApp group for teachers and saw an opportunity to apply for the TAG programme. Despite initial hesitation, Alaa decided to take a leap of faith and applied, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.
The TAG programme introduced Alaa to innovative teaching methods and a supportive network of educators. The experience not only improved her teaching skills but also helped her build resilience and reignite her enthusiasm for the profession.
Motivated by this positive change, she joined another British Council initiative in 2022, the Teach. Engage. Aspire. (TEA) programme. This programme provided a wealth of resources and training tailored to the needs of English teachers in Egypt, including comprehensive curricula and practical teaching techniques.
One of the most impactful aspects of Alaa’s journey was the opportunity to attend the prestigious International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) conference in the UK in April 2024. The event brought together teaching experts, trainers and educators from around the world.
The experience broadened Alaa’s perspective, introducing her to the latest trends and methodologies in English language education and giving her the chance to network with international peers. This opportunity was a turning point, solidifying her commitment to professional growth and excellence in teaching.
Since participating in these British Council initiatives, Alaa has transformed into a confident, creative and resourceful educator. She has developed a passion for fostering an inclusive and positive learning environment, and she is now adept at engaging her students with diverse and effective teaching methods.
Alaa continues to seek out opportunities for professional development, believing in the transformative power of education and its ability to change lives.
